Broga, Brah

What the heck is Broga, you ask? Well, only one of the greatest activities ever created!

Olde Mecklenburg Brewery in Charlotte has partnered with our local Lululemon store for free yoga classes each Tuesday night (yes you read that correctly, A BREWERY). And did I mention it’s FREE?!

Some of you may be thinking, isn’t that a little counter-productive?

To you I would respond, not for this girl!

While yes, I am a beer drinker, I think the unique location makes my desire to practice yoga even stronger. It’s like the NoDa beer runs that occur each Wednesday night. Yes, it takes me 40 minutes to drive there from work in a mess of traffic, and yes we run the same 3 or 5 mile route every single week, but it’s outside my normal locations and thus, exciting. I’ve tried a handful of different studios in Charlotte but only ever enjoyed classes at three of them. This unique location offers so much to the senses, from the smell of hops to the reverberating sounds in the packed room, to the warmth of everyone’s body heat. it really increases the success of your practice by surrounding you with the experience (at least for me)!

The class is a great mix of people and levels. There are those who are quite advanced in their practice, those who teach, those who are beginners/intermediate and both men and women of all ages. I’ve never felt judged for being unable to successfully complete one pose over another and the energy in the room screams happy and positive. What more could you want?

For those local people who are intrigued and considering joining me here are a couple of helpful pointers:

  • Arrive early – While class doesn’t begin until 6:30 p.m., the room was nearly full by 6:15 p.m. People have been turned away in the past so make sure you’re not one of them.
  • Bring your mat – As it is held in a brewery, there aren’t any mats to use or rent. If you don’t have one of your own, pop over to Marshalls, Ross or Target and grab an inexpensive one. They don’t have to be fancy to get the job done.
  • Pack light – There is very little room once everyone gets crammed in. Don’t anticipate bringing your entire workout bag inside and finding a place for it.
  • While yes, the class is free, stay after for a beer or some food and support your local brewery for offering such an awesome class!

I’d love to see some familiar faces there and hear about your own experience with Broga.

  1. That sounds awesome! I think the combo of beer + yoga works because they’re both super chill 🙂 I wish we had something like this in Philly because I would so try it out!
